Scylla and Charybdis:Scylla was a sea-monster trans-formed into a cluster of rocks in the strait between It-aly and Sicily,and opposite Scylla lay the whirlpoolCharybdis. The nearness of these dangers to each oth-er gave rise to a proverb: “Thou fallest into Scylla,endeavouring to avoid Charybdis.”西拉是意大利与西西里岛之间海峡中的 一群礁石（据云为海怪所变），卡利布底斯是与其相对的一个危险的漩涡，船只到此，常常遇难。因而产生了一句古谚：“当你竭力逃避卡利布底斯（漩涡）的时候，却撞上了西拉（礁石）。”
